Frequently Asked Questions

Registrations

You'll need to be age 18 or over to join our leagues. Our leagues involve strenuous physical activity, so we ask all players to complete a Risk Assessment Questionnaire when they register, and to take part only if they're in good health to do so. If you have any concerns about whether a league is right for you, we'd recommend a quick chat with your doctor first, and you're always welcome to reach out to us with questions.

Easy - register everyone together in one checkout on the Individual Registration page, and we'll put you on the same team. Already paid separately? Email us and we'll sort you out. We'll add just enough other players to round out your squad to a full team.

Of course! We expect plenty of people to. Just register as an individual, and we'll place you on a team with other individual sign-ups. You'll have a full squad for the season - a great way to meet new people. Come as you are, we'll take care of the rest.

Each league lists a recommended team size as a range. The minimum is your safety net. The maximum is a guide, not a hard limit.

For example, in a 4 v 4 league, you only need 4 players on court at any one time. But you'll want more than 4 players on the team. We suggest a minimum so that even when a few people can't make it on a given week, you'll still have enough to field a full team plus subs to rotate. 4 players with no backups means 1 absence leaves you short.

The maximum is just a guide, not a limit. You're welcome to build an even bigger squad, and in some cases you should. If your group has busy work schedules or you know several players can't make it for chunks of the season, you should recruit a bigger team. The bigger your team, the more subs you'll have each week, and the easier it is to always show up with a full 4 or more.

In short: build your team around how often your players can actually turn up. Teammates with reliable schedules? You could go with the minimum. Teammates unpredictable schedules? Recruit a bigger squad so you're never caught short.

Don't panic, but do plan ahead. If you know you'll be short for an upcoming game, your best move is to organise for a sub in advance. You can bring in a friend, or borrow a player from another team, anyone is welcome to fill in, as long as they've created a Halftime account first (so they're covered by our waiver).

If you can't find a sub, email us as soon as possible so we can help. Depending on the situation, we'll either see if your opponents are happy to lend you a player on the day, or if there's no way to make up the numbers, the game may be recorded as a walkover and cancelled.

The earlier you let us know, the more options we have to keep your game on. So if you're worried about numbers, reach out before game day rather than on it.

The whole point of Halftime is its inclusive culture, with sportsmanship at its core. You don't need any experience to join in. To get a head start, have a read of the rules on the relevant sport's page on our website, and maybe watch a few intro videos on YouTube. Beyond that, fear not! Your League Host and your teammates will help you find your feet. Just being some keen energy and a willingness to learn. You'll get the hang of it in no time. Come play!

The Leagues

Each game is 1 hour per week for the 4-week season. Your exact match time will fall within the time slot listed (3-5pm). You'll get a finalised schedule with your exact match times, and everything else you need to know, by email before the season kicks off.

Halftime is built around social, friendly competition, not hyper-competitive elite sport. Your League Host is there to help keep the intensity in check. The goal is always to keep things fun and friendly. Sub off whenever you need, chat to your League Host whenever you need.

That said, sport is still sport! Some games can get energetic and competitive in the moment. We can’t guarantee that bumps, knocks or injuries will never happen, but we do our best to create a safe environment.

All games are overseen by a League Host who helps manage the flow of the game. Our League Hosts aren’t there to officiate every game like a professional sporting match, but they will make calls, keep time, help manage intensity, and step in if things get overly heated or unsafe.
